A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held in Schlater, MS (Leflore County) for a community well. Dr. Pamela Gary, CEO of Central Mississippi, Inc., staff, and board members hosted the event on the site where the well will be installed. The well will provide safe drinking water to five low-income families in the area. The story broke last November when a journalist with MS Today wrote an article about families living without running water. Local and State government officials subsequently got involved in efforts to address this need. Later, CMI was contacted and Dr. Gary sprang into action. Dr. Gary contacted Tina Ruffin, Director of Community Services (MDHS) and a grant was written to fund the project. The well is expected to be installed before the end of the year now that the grant has been funded.
